Responding to a video clip in the media showing a brutal assault on a Nigerian national, accused of committing theft, by a mob in New Delhi, Asmita Basu, Programmes Director, Amnesty International India, said:

“The Nigerian national was barely conscious and severely wounded when he was handed over to the police on September 24. Although the police registered an FIR against the Nigerian national upon his release from the hospital, it was only after the video emerged that an FIR was registered against his attackers. Police inaction in cases of such mob violence will only embolden attackers.”

“Despite denial by the police, this attack is another example of hate crimes against Africans in India. The Delhi police must bring all involved in the assault to justice.”
